Accepted, but tell us first
These are fine to load, but they either change the pricing or require a heads up so the load can be routed correctly. Say so at booking and the price is settled before delivery rather than after.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mattresses and box springs | Often carry a per item disposal fee |
| Appliances | Anything with refrigerant needs certified handling |
| Tires | Charged per tire, cannot go to a standard landfill |
| Concrete, dirt, rock and brick | Priced by weight, needs a clean separate load |
| Treated lumber and railroad ties | Handled separately from clean wood |
| Large amounts of electronics | Routed to e-waste recycling |
Never allowed
These are prohibited in every container, on every job, without exception. They are not a policy preference, they are a regulatory and safety line.
- Hazardous waste of any kind
- Wet paint, stains, solvents and thinners
- Motor oil, antifreeze, fuel and other automotive fluids
- Propane tanks and pressurized cylinders
- Car batteries and household batteries
- Pesticides, herbicides and pool chemicals
- Asbestos containing material
- Medical waste and sharps
- Any liquid, including wet concrete slurry
Asbestos on older Reno homes
Homes built before about 1980, common through Old Southwest, the Wells Avenue corridor and the University district, can contain asbestos in popcorn ceilings, vinyl floor tile and its adhesive, pipe and duct wrap, and some roofing felt. Asbestos cannot go in a dumpster and cannot be removed by a homeowner and thrown away. It requires a qualified abatement professional and separate regulated disposal. If your remodel uncovers material you are unsure about, stop and get it tested before it goes anywhere.
Two loading rules
- Do not load above the rail. An overfilled container cannot be legally hauled. If the driver arrives and cannot tarp the load, you get a return trip and a second charge.
- Distribute the weight. Heavy items go in first and spread across the floor, not piled at one end. A container loaded heavy on one side is difficult and sometimes unsafe to pull onto the truck.
When you are not sure
Call (775) 526-4907 and describe what you have. It takes thirty seconds and it is a great deal cheaper than a rejected load or a contamination charge.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a mattress in a dumpster in Reno?
Usually yes, though mattresses typically carry a per item disposal fee. Mention it at booking so it is priced up front.
Can I put paint cans in the dumpster?
Only if the paint is fully dried out and hardened. Wet paint is prohibited. Liquid paint goes to Washoe County household hazardous waste drop-off.
Are appliances allowed?
Yes, but anything containing refrigerant requires certified handling and may carry a fee. Tell us what you have when you book.
Can I put tires in?
Tires are accepted but are charged per tire and cannot go to a standard landfill.
What happens if a prohibited item ends up in the load?
The load can be rejected at the facility or charged a contamination fee, which is passed through. If you find something questionable after loading, call us before pickup and we will sort it out.
