What a roll off dumpster is
A roll off is an open top steel container delivered on a truck that rolls it off the bed onto your driveway or job site. It stays as long as you need it, you load it at your own pace, and the same truck hauls it away when you are done. That is different from a junk removal service, where a crew shows up once and takes what fits in their truck. If your project runs over days rather than hours, a roll off is the cheaper and more practical option.
Our three sizes
All three include 10 days on site. Extensions are $10 per day and overage is $50 per ton over the included weight. Full details are on the cost page.
Picking the right container
Two questions settle it. First, how much volume: count your debris in pickup truck loads and match it to the sizes above. Second, how heavy: if the load is mostly concrete, dirt, rock, tile or roofing, size down and keep the load clean, because you will hit the weight limit before you fill the box.
Most Reno homeowners land on the 20 yard. Most contractors running a full remodel or new build land on the 30 yard with scheduled swaps. Heavy material goes in the 10 yard.
Delivery and placement in Reno
Plan for the container length plus roughly 10 to 12 feet of clearance so the truck can position and roll off. Overhead needs to be clear of branches, wires and eaves. The driver cannot rotate the container after it is set, so decide before delivery which end you want the swing door facing.
On private property no permit is needed. If the container has to sit on a public street or right of way, the City of Reno requires an encroachment permit. We explain that process on the permit page.
Local conditions worth planning around
- Wind. Spring afternoons in the Truckee Meadows move light debris. Load insulation, cardboard and felt low, or tarp overnight.
- Winter. Snow and ice on a sloped driveway can make placement unsafe. We may recommend a flat pad or street drop instead.
- Older housing stock. Homes around Old Southwest, Wells Avenue and the University district often have lath and plaster, which is far heavier than modern drywall.
- HOA neighborhoods. Somersett, Damonte Ranch and similar associations sometimes limit how long a container can sit in view of the street.
